Oldboy

The new, American remake, that is. Far inferior to the Korean original. And this was a Spike Lee joint? It sure didn’t feel like it. Could’ve been directed by anyone, it seemed. The only Lee signature I saw was one of those he favors where the camera and subject are together on a rolling cart, shot from below so you see the sky/background going past while the actor is obviously not walking.

Brolin is game, and Elizabeth Olsen is well cast, but why make the Samuel Jackson character a cartoon? And the bad guy too – such a caricature… This seemed to be one of those films that doesn’t know what genre it wants to fit into. Reviews warned that it was ultra-violent, but done like this, it isn’t real enough to warrant real shock.

Overall, hugely disappointing.
